Mountaineering
Ernest Hemmingway famously quipped, “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.” While many people would think it foolhardy at best to scale mountains for recreation or glory, a small cohort of avid alpinists reach for the heavens in all seasons, testing their mettle against everything Mother Nature dishes out. Mountaineering usually takes on two main forms, Alpine mountaineering and Expedition mountaineering. Alpine mountaineers are those who practice climbing in medium-size mountains. These mountains are usually less than 4000 meters, and can be climbed in a few days. Alpine climbers usually bring lightweight equipment and move fast. Their goal is to reach the summit as quickly as possible. Expedition mountaineers are those hardy souls who endeavor to climb higher peaks and spend more time at altitude, sometimes over 8,000 meters, perhaps in the Himalayas or Karakoram range in Pakistan. They often need to carry heavy packs, employ sherpas and climb slowly. These expeditions may also involve traveling long distances between base camps.
As a proprietor of a mountaineering business, your target consumers are adventure-seekers and athletes. You are ideally an expert yourself; certified in lifesaving techniques and disaster mitigation. Selling the service of mountaineering is one aspect of the business, and an online storefront is necessary for this. It should contain photos of the mountains where you offer services, descriptions of the difficulty and duration of prospective climbs, and a calendar that features exact days of the training course and date ranges for the climb itself. In addition to guide services, you may also decide to sell or rent supplies. In this case you’ll need to feature maps, light sources, compasses, fire-building material, knives, belays, harnesses, boots, crampons, tents, ropes, pullies or entire “climbing kits.”
